“Luke’n For the Stars” is a gorgeous blue with just a hint of shimmer. This polish is name in honor of Luke, one of our 2019 Spring Collection Honorees. Luke’s story, as told by him mom, is below.
Luke was a playful, loving, caring little 10 yr old boy who always loved to help others. He LOVED Christmas, but not for the reason of receiving toys, but to spread Christmas cheer to others. He loved King Ranch trucks, loved to play outside, swim, the beach, float the river and he loved music. From the time he was about 6 months old, he had an almost unusual obsession with the American flag! Instead of wanting a toy at the store, he always wanted another flag! At one point, he owned about 50, all sizes. He was known as the Flag boy, always STRONGLY encouraging our neighbors to get a flag pole and display the stars and stripes, and most of them did!
He had always been a very healthy child, rarely needing to go to the doctor for anything more than wellness check-ups or a few minor colds. Upon the beginning of 4th grade however, many noticeable changes started to occur. Double vision and mild headaches were the first of symptoms, which obviously led us to take him to the eye doctor. Before his appointment date, his left eye had noticeably started turning inward. There, he was prescribed glasses for nearsightedness, and the eye doctor assured us that his eyes were just simply changing and developing at his age and glasses would correct it, even the turned-in eye. However, headaches, irritability and balance issues became increasingly evident that there was something considerably more serious as the weeks went by. One Saturday while playing at his good friends house down the street, his friend's dad noticed that Luke was bumping into walls while walking down their hall. That evening, he fell into the bathtub while giving his dog a bath.
The next morning, we took him to the ER at Children's Hospital of San Antonio. Our fears were faced and confirmed. The initial PET scan revealed a large tumor in his brain stem. They then did a MRI, and gave us the diagnosis no parent ever wants to hear, "Your son has a rare, cancerous, inoperable brain stem tumor, DIPG or Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, for which there is no cure. He has 9 -12 mo." He only survived 9 1/2 mo and passed away Sept. 30, 2009.
I came up with the name "Luke'n for the Stars" (Looking for the Stars) to describe the color for two reasons. I chose the royal blue color with silver sparkles because I felt it best represented the patriotic love he had. The blue represents the stars in the flag and the silver represents the stars in the sky, up high in the heavens where Luke now resides for eternity.
