"Sassy Pants" is named in honor of Amelia May Watkins.  Amelia was the happiest and "sassiest" little girl until Stage IV Neuroblastoma took her life.  We honor Amelia's life with this beautiful polish picked and named by her mom.

    Amelia’s Story:

Amelia Mae Watkins was born on July 11, 2016 in Virginia. She was the happiest and sassiest baby around. Amelia was the proud little sister to Kaden and the sweetest daughter to her parents.  She had the brightest blue eyes with thick beautiful dark hair. Millie brought smiles to everyone she came in contact with on a daily basis.

When Amelia was 10 months old she and her family started their cross country move due to her dad being active duty in the Marine Corps. Throughout their journey, she started to seem like she just was not feeling well, losing her appetite and becoming increasingly lethargic. After a few visits to urgent care as well as the emergency room in different states, she seemed to be feeling a little better. While visiting family in Phoenix, Amelia started to act as if she wasn’t feeling well again so her parents took her in to the ER where the doctor noticed she was anemic, dehydrated and her stomach looked enlarged.  After multiple tests, her parents received the news that turned their lives upside down.

She had advanced high risk, stage 4 neuroblastoma.  The tumor started to grow from her kidney and completely metastasized throughout her body.  In addition to the tumor that was taking over her body, she had tumor spots in her lymph nodes, on her spine, on her femur, jawbone, eye socket as well as both sides of her body in her bone marrow.

The team of doctors felt that she was stable enough to be air lifted to Rady Children’s Hospital where she would start and undergo treatment at her new home in California.  Unfortunately her body couldn’t handle too much more. During her MRI, she coded and needed to be placed on a ventilator. From there, she stayed in the PICU and the team decided along with her parents that she would need to immediately start chemotherapy in Arizona at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. After completing the biopsy to confirm the diagnosis, Amelia started her first round of treatment with the strongest medicine that a 10 month old could have. Over the course of 5 days of her first chemotherapy treatment, the doctors and her parents learned that the tumor was much more aggressive than they had originally thought. Amelia was placed on CRRT, received multiple blood transfusions, platelet transfusions along with having to continue to stay on ventilator and continuing to be on numerous medications to help keep her sedated and from feeling any discomfort.  During that time, she was not allowed to be held by anyone, including her parents, she could not open her eyes to see anyone but could only hear everyone talking to her. Unfortunately Amelia needed more time than she had to allow the medicine to work and shrink the tumor.

Amelia passed away only 8 short days after learning of her diagnosis while finally being held by both of her parents.

Amelia never showed any signs of battling this disease her whole 10 months of life. She genuinely was the happiest baby and loved her big brother more than anything in the world.  She has touched so many lives around her, near and far with her contagious smile. She is missed terribly every minute of every day. Her parents and big brothter will continue to work tirelessly to increase awareness of this disease, continue to spread her smile and her light as well as raise money to help find a cure in memory of their sweet baby girl.
